Here at Lehigh Valley Oral Surgery & Implant Center, we employ a straightforward dental implant process to ensure that each patient can receive the results they are looking for. By utilizing an easy to follow five step process, oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Ahmad Chaudhry is able to provide his patients with beautiful dental implant results that are functional, stable, and reliable. Here at our Bethlehem, PA practice, we believe that the only way our patients can make the best decisions for their oral health is if they are well informed about the treatments available to them. With this belief in mind, we encourage you to continue reading in order to learn more about the dental implant process and what each step of it entails.
For the most part, the dental implant process can be broken down into five steps: the consultation, application of any needed supplemental procedures, the implant placement, the recovery period, and the attachment of the restoration. While the second step of the process can be optional, the other four steps are mandatory for any patient moving forward with treatment using dental implants. For more information on what each step of this process entails, continue on below.
The first step of the dental implant process is to attend a no-obligation consultation with Dr. Ahmad Chaudhry. This consultation is completely mandatory because we use it to determine the condition of your jaw structure, your candidacy for the treatment, as well as to find out what specifically you are hoping to achieve with your dental implant treatment. We want to know your smile goals, and we will help you determine whether or not dental implants are the best option for fulfilling those goals. We will also use this consultation to determine whether or not you will need a supplemental procedure before you will be able to have dental implants placed in your jawbone.
Some patients may not be able to have their dental implant placed immediately after having their consultation. The reason for this is the fact that these patients may have a condition that could drastically lower the chances of their implant treatment succeeding. Using supplemental procedures, we can restore any damage done to the patient’s jawbone or gums that could be the reason why their chances of success with implants may be lower. By restoring these structures, the patient will be able to move forward with their treatment without worrying about whether or not their treatment will be a success.
Once your jaw structure is ready, you will be able to have your dental implant placed. During this procedure, an implant fixture is inserted into the empty spot left behind by your missing tooth. Once properly positioned, the area around the fixture will be stitched up so that it can heal. At this point, an abutment and temporary replacement tooth may be attached to the fixture. However, we may hold off on attaching these pieces until after the recovery period of the implant process.
With your implant fixture in place, your mouth will need three to six months to heal before it will be ready to support your new replacement tooth. During this time, a process called osseointegration occurs. Osseointegration is a natural process that works to integrate your implant fixture into your oral anatomy, convincing your body that the fixture is no different from any of your natural tooth roots. This integration is only possible because the titanium used to create the implant fixture is biocompatible, meaning your body cannot differentiate between your implant fixture and natural tooth roots.
Once your implant fixture has finished healing, you will return to our office in order to have your restoration placed. The most common form of restoration we use at our office is the porcelain crown, though we can also use implant supported dental bridges and dentures if your needs call for it. Regardless of which restoration best fits your needs, your replacement teeth will be custom crafted to match your remaining natural teeth, ensuring that they are indistinguishable from your real teeth.
As you can see, the dental implant process provides a straightforward method for restoring one or more missing teeth with beautiful, quality replacement teeth that work and feel just like real teeth.
